The Bioluminescence project brings great skills to the younger members of our rural communities. Students learn mapping, projection and event management skills similar to those used at festivals of light such as VIVID Sydney. Supported by local organisations, there have been 2 presentations of the Bioluminescence Project in the Bega Valley in 2022.

We are pleased to announce the Bioluminescence Project has received funding from the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation. The amount of $50,000 allows the Bioluminescence project to present 5 projection events, with the accompanying workshops, across the Bega Valley and Eurobodalla Shires throughout 2023.

Scott Baker, Project Facilitator says: “This is a really exciting opportunity to build capability and capacity for young people in a growing industry; to give them exposure and experience using these technologies, and also in the facilitation of events for their communities, which might not normally happen in our region.

Bioluminescence is driven by young people and is a perfect balance of technology, nature, art and skills growth. I’m looking forward to delivering these outcomes alonside our region’s young people throughout the year.”

The first Bioluminescence project for 2023 will take place at Cobargo Folk Festival 3, 4, 5th March. Students from Bega and Narooma High School will undertake two days of workshops, learning image capture, projection mapping, event management and safety, presenting their projection event at the festival on Saturday night.

Bioluminescence events are also slated for: Tilba, Towamba, Pambula and finally at the Tathra Wharf on the completion of the wharf pylon reconstruction.

The Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation was established in 1962. The foundation funds projects that back young people with innovative opportunities that advance their independence, social purpose and future security.

Through alignment with local organisations The Atlas of Life, (Inspiring Australia) the Bournda EEC, our Regional Science Hub and with local groups such as Life Under the Wharf and the BioBlitz movement, and also our local High Schools, and Colleges, the Bioluminescence project was able to present 2 successful projects in 2022, which has shown the interest and creativity our young people possess to explore possibilities in the realm of large scale, spectacular community events.
