Bioblitz 2015 - Wallagoot catchment
The BioBlitz will be on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th of December with our Basecamp at Bournda Environmental Education Centre. We have had a great response from the prosepctive Survey Leaders so we are offering a broad spread of surveys of habitats and species groups. Go to our booking system to secure your places and find out more : wallagoot-catchment-bioblitz-tickets For our 4th BioBlitz we will be working with a cluster of partners to survey the biodiversity of Wallagoot catchment. Our records will contribute baseline data for Bega LALC management plans of some of their land as well as adding to our Atlas of Life database.
The Wallagoot catchment is predominately forest or woodland with cleared land for agriculture. Wallagoot Lake itself is an ICOLL - with high vulnerability as it has the lowest opening frequency on the South coast. It has seagrass beds and small areas of saltmarsh). There are large areas protected in the Bournda National Park and Bournda Nature Reserve as well as Bega Local Aboriginal Land Council land and property in private ownership.
There are several endangered ecological communities: River-flat Eucalypt Forest on Coastal Floodplains, Freshwater Wetlands on Coastal Floodplains, Bangalay Sand Forest, Swamp Oak Floodplain forest and Coastal Saltmarsh.
There are a number of threatened flora an fauna species as well as a number of invasive species in the area. The Kalaru/Wallagoot area is rich in fauna values, especially for the Yellow-bellied Glider, Glossy Black Cockatoo, and threatened shore and water birds. The area is a wildlife corridor allowing species to move between more and less disturbed areas.
We will have a great Basecamp where you come to register and meet your Survey Leaders, we have displays - "Museum in a Box" from the Australian Museum and more, presentations - Stuart Harris and his Peacock spiders - and exhibitions the Atlas 2015 photocompetition winners and much more.......
We invite you to join us, either as participants - watch the website for information and later to sign up for surveys, survey leaders - tell us your speciality! or volunteers, survey leader's helpers or photographers, identification and data input volunteers and Basecamp helpers, guides, catering and operational.
