The Crested Tern (Thalasseus bergii) is a widespread species and a common sighting around Merimbula Lake. At times there can be thousands of this species resting on the oyster leases in the front section of the lake.

They can often be seen bathing in the shallow water near the entrance of the lake ...

... and when they take off they shake vigorously to remove excess water before flying back to join the other birds resting on the exposed sand or sitting on the oyster leases.
